Advising During Orientation

Advising During Orientation

Orientation offers lots of chances to bring your questions about academic choices and opportunities to Wellesley’s many academic departments and programs. When you arrive, please check Guidbook and your printed Orientation schedule for specific dates and times, and check back on this page later in the summer for details.

Key Advising Programs

A Community of Scholars
This small group advising session, including faculty, deans and student leaders, will provide an overview of the Wellesley academic community experience, geared to answering the questions new students have about getting good advice during Orientation and registering for fall classes. You will leave with a roadmap of advising events and decisions to make over your first week on campus, as we start the new academic year.

Academic Fair, during Orientation, in the Keohane Sports Center
Faculty from each department and program will be available for consultation. This is your main opportunity to talk with faculty about the details of your emerging study plans. Many of you will want to visit the large departments to get information about good starting points and requirements, but as you do that, also check out programs that you may not be familiar with. Don’t feel you must talk to each department, but do plan to walk through the Sports Center to see what is available.

Pre-Health Information Session, during Orientation
Information and advising related to education based on a career in the broad field of health care will be offered at the Pre-Health Information Session.

Individual Advising
Many faculty advisors will be available to meet their advisees during orientation on a designated day.  Students will learn their advisors' names before Orientation, on MyWellesley (in mid-August), and should contact their advisors by email to make specific arrangements. Students whose advisors are not available during Orientation are welcome to head to Advising Central to meet deans and student leaders who are ready to help you with your questions about fall courses and registration.

Some other opportunities during Orientation

Academic Success Coaches
Part of our programming during Orientation is an introduction to the Academic Success Coaches in your residence halls. Academic Success Coaches are student leaders trained to help you get started with your academic career here and to know the answers to many of your questions. Academic Success Coaches will give you an overview of how to make use of the full array of academic resources, hold drop-in office hours to help with questions about building your fall schedule, and assist with learning the mechanics of the registration process. In addition, faculty members will welcome you to Wellesley and share their perspectives on important parts of your academic experience.

Computing assistance
Computing is an essential part of academic life, and you will have several chances to learn about computing at Wellesley, beginning at move-in and continuing through the week. If you are having trouble getting connected, there will be help available from Library and Technology Services staff in Clapp Library throughout the week; ask your Orientation Mentor if you are not sure where to go.

Talk with professors about placement exams
Many of you took placement exams online over the summer, and others will be taking placement exams during Orientation. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about fields offering placement exams and your specific options.  The faculty members giving these tests are there to help you make decisions about whether their courses will be good for you, so talk to them about that before and after the tests.
