German Studies

Welcome to German Studies!

Our department continually works at building a space in which all students and members of the community feel welcomed, included, supported, and valued. We are committed to giving each of you a voice and to celebrating diversity in its many manifestations, including place of origin, ethnicity, race, religion, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and disability.

The exciting curriculum of our department introduces students to the film, literature, sociocultural development, history, and contemporary life in Germany, Austria, and German-speaking Switzerland. Our language courses emphasize quick acquisition of communication skills.  Many of our upper-level courses are conducted in German, so that students can reach a high level of linguistic fluency and become familiar with multiple aspects of German-speaking cultures.

  • We offer small classes that draw on interactive and innovative materials and teaching, emphasize student achievement, and offer a tight-knit intellectual community.
  • Our Wintersession in Berlin course allows students to accelerate their language studies
  • Students can apply for one of our paid summer internships in Dresden, where they can immerse themselves in the culture while gaining valuable practical experience.
