Katharine Malone Prize for Academic Excellence

The Katharine Malone Prizes for academic excellence were established in 1985 by alumna Claudine B. Malone '63 in honor of her mother Katharine, and to recognize Wellesley students who represent the combination of academic excellence, active and contributing citizenship, and accomplishment.
 KATHARINE MALONE PRIZES SELECTION CRITERIA
 
THE 2021 KATHARINE MALONE SCHOLAR
                                                                                             
A truly outstanding senior, embodying the educational ideal of Plato's Guardian, shall be named the Katharine Malone Scholar. Candidates shall be drawn from those women who: have been enrolled and in residence at Wellesley College for at least six consecutive semesters; have a cumulative grade point average of 3.9 or better; have a minimum of 24 institutional units earned; and who are committed to being enrolled full-time in a Wellesley College academic program for their entire senior year. As of the 2020-2021 academic year, the Katharine Malone Scholar will receive seventy-five thousand dollars to be paid in the Spring of her senior year.
 
If the Katharine Malone Scholar enrolls in a graduate degree program approved by the Selection Committee within five years of graduation, as of the 2020-2021 academic year, she will be eligible to receive a fifteen thousand dollar stipend each year for up to four additional years. Such programs might include, but not be limited to, an M.A.T., or Ph D. in the Liberal Arts, or a degree in Law, Medicine, Business, Engineering, or Architecture. The Selection Committee shall determine that the university in which the Scholar is enrolled has an outstanding degree program in her field and shall determine annually that the candidate is making satisfactory progress toward her degree.
 
Winners of the Katharine Malone First Year Prize and the Katharine Malone Sophomore Prize shall be eligible to be candidates for selection as the Katharine Malone Scholar if they meet all the criteria.
 
Prize amounts and criteria are effective for all awards given in academic year 2020-2021. Amounts and criteria are subject to change annually at the discretion of the Donor and Malone Prize Selection Committee.
