While all recreation is a great way to stay active, reduce stress and have fun, outdoor recreation has long been recognized as a uniquely powerful way to learn leadership skills. Genuine experiences—complete with genuine risk—foster skills that cannot be learned in a classroom. The mountains teach risk management, communication and tolerance for adversity and uncertainty, among many other life-skills. Unpredictable mountain weather, self-imposed hardship and the joy of accomplishment forge powerful friendships. Ultimately, the mountains teach self-reliance and team-reliance, skills that are difficult to learn in our hyper-comfortable modern world. Students typically learn that they are capable of more than they imagined. PE credit now available.
