Wellesley Recognized on Lists Ranging from Cute to Contemplative
From Buzzfeed to Barbara Walters, Wellesley was seen making the “Best of 2013” lists as alumnae, exhibits, centers, and the ever-beautiful campus were noticed by the outside world. Here’s a selection.
Buzzfeed named Wellesley the second of 41 Scenic College Campuses That Were Made for Instagram, including “the sunset over Lake Waban” as the obligatory Instagram scene for every photographer.
Katelyn Campbell ’17, who made news last year as she fought for a right to comprehensive sex education, was named one of Think Progress’ 10 Women’s Health Heroes Who Inspired Us in 2013. Think Progress lauded Campbell’s activism, noting that she had inspired many around the country.
In the Huffington Post’s Top Ten Contemporary Art Exhibits in the Country, art critic Stephen Knudsen included the Davis Museum’s Eija-Liisa Ahtila: Olentoja (Creatures), ranking it third in the nation. He wrote, “Finnish artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila has been a figure in the vanguard movement re-imagining film art into multiple screen pieces with cinematic production values. This exhibition of her key works included House (2002), one of the best pieces in the movement. This work demonstrates that beauty and transcendence do not have to be put into the satirical air quotes of postmodernism to be critically and aesthetically relevant.”
The blog A Good Run rated Wellesley’s campus as one of the 50 Beautiful Colleges for a Good Run.
Television host Barbara Walters named Hillary Rodham Clinton ’69 her Most Fascinating Person of the Year.
Metrowest Daily News praised the Davis Museum for its “exciting, even groundbreaking” exhibitions, including two exhibits as part of 2013 Memorable Art Moments. Chris Bergeron noted, “Director Lisa Fischman organized Festina Lente, an unorthodox exhibit that let visitors get up close and personal with rare artifacts from the museum’s Classical art collection. At the year’s end, she hosted three videos of haunting beauty by Finnish artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila who infused everyday scenes with magic and dread.”
Metrowest Daily News also included the Actors from the London Stage (AFTLS) performance of Othello at Wellesley in its list of best regional theatrical productions in 2013. Correspondent David Brooks Andrews was “transfixed,” writing, “Richard Neale was breathtaking as the horrible Iago. At times, he would span several distinct emotions while delivering one line, reminding us that theater at its best is all about emotions, more than words, even when the play was written by Shakespeare.”
Author of the respected Fiske’s Guide to Colleges, Edward B. Fiske included Wellesley in his list of Top 10 Ivy Alternatives for his ebook Beyond the Ivies.
And starting 2014 off with a bang, Heather West ‘07 earned a place in Forbes magazine’s prestigious list of 30 Under 30 notable young professionals in the fields of law and policy. West works as a policy analyst for Google, consulting on issues of privacy, including the debates brought up by recent N.S.A. spying revelations.
