The Office of International Study (OIS) offers a photo contest each year, inviting students to share some of their study abroad experience through imagery.

In 2014, winners were announced in four categories: Cityscapes, Landscapes, Selfie with a Landmark, and Picture with a Story. Says OIS Director Jennifer Thomas-Starck, "It was great to see all of the amazing places studying abroad took [students] this past year and to hear all of the wonderful stories."

Among many beautiful and impressive and fun photos, the judges chose the following for special recognition. More entries can be viewed on the OIS Facebook page.

Photo with a Story

Carrington OBrion '15, who wrote about the accompanying photo:

raising a Wellesley flag along a windy shoreThis photo was captured on the Wintersession in Crete trip. For the whole trip, we had been struggling to hold the Wellesley flag in the wind as we posed all over the island. On this day, we pulled over at a deserted beach after a long day of touring archaeological sites, mostly because the sunset was so beautiful. Unlike during the vacation months, Crete in January was all ours. As we fanned out, Ramona found a piece of driftwood the perfect size for the flag. This photo was taken as she struggled to get the flag upright for a group photo. Unfortunately, the wind just wasn’t in our favor that day—and the Wellesley was backwards. I found I liked it better this way—a little imperfect, but still beautiful—rather like my semester abroad.
