Michele Sison ’81 presented her credentials to the President of the Republic of Haiti, Jovenel Moise, on February 21. She was named the U.S. Ambassador to Haiti on November 2, 2017, and sworn in on February 12.

Previously, Sison served as deputy representative of the United States to the United Nations, with the rank of Ambassador, and deputy representative of the United States in the Security Council of the United Nations. She has also held the positions of U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives, U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon, and U.S. Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. Sison has worked for the U.S. Department of State for 35 years.

“I am deeply honored to have been asked to represent my country as the new U.S. Ambassador to Haiti,” she said in a press release from the State Department. “Haiti has held a very special place in my heart since the early 1980s; I began my diplomatic career in 1982 as a young diplomat in Port au Prince and have always remembered the warmth of the Haitian people, the country’s great natural beauty, and Haiti’s unique culture and proud history.
