Temporary Accommodations

Temporary Injury or Illness Accommodations Policy

Students at Wellesley College who experience temporary injuries or medical conditions that hinder their ability to access courses may be eligible for temporary disability services. Temporary medical conditions include instances such as a broken hand, knee surgery recovery, injured limbs, impairments following medical treatments, or short-term illnesses like hospitalization for pneumonia. While these conditions may not fall under the traditional definition of disabilities as outlined in the ADA, they may necessitate academic accommodations during a semester.

Accommodations for temporary medical conditions are granted on a temporary, non-renewable basis. If these conditions persist or worsen, potentially becoming permanent disabilities, additional discussions and updated medical documentation may be required to determine appropriate accommodations.

Procedures for Requesting Accommodations for Temporary Injury or Recovery Conditions:

1. Registration with the Office of Accessibility and Disability Resources (ADR):

  • Students seeking accommodations due to a temporary condition or medical injury must register with the ADR.
  • Submit the online Student Disability Services Registration Form via the AIM student portal, accessible using MyWellesley credentials.

2. Submission of Supporting Medical Documentation:

  • Attach supporting medical documentation of the injury/condition to the AIM student portal (if available in digital format).

3. Intake Meeting with the ADR:

  • Upon receipt of medical documentation, the student will be contacted to schedule an intake meeting with an ADR disability specialist.
  • This meeting can be conducted in-person or through virtual chat platforms such as Google Meet/Hangouts or Zoom.

Note: The ADR does not provide personal assistance, such as carrying books, wash laundry, provide loans of wheelchairs or crutches, golf carts, personal attendants, or other personal aide assistance to classrooms or residence halls. Students with temporary injuries impacting mobility are encouraged to refer to accessible campus routes for guidance.
